A rapidly spreading brush fire in Trabuco Canyon, Southern California, has burned approximately 1,900 acres and triggered evacuation orders for several areas, including Rancho Santa Margarita. The fire ignited around 1:30 p.m. on September 9, near the Trabuco Flyers Club, and escalated quickly, prompting local authorities to issue evacuation warnings and orders.
By 2 p.m., the blaze had charred about 7 acres, but within three hours, it had expanded significantly. The fire’s intensity was compounded by light wind gusts that pushed the flames further into the brush and away from nearby residences.
Evacuation warnings were issued for residents in areas including Rose Canyon Road, Trabuco Creek Road, Trabuco Canyon Road, Trabuco Oaks Drive, Joplin Loop, and Cook’s Corner. By 3 p.m., mandatory evacuations were enforced for Meander Lane, Robinson Ranch community, Robinson Ranch Road, and Shadow Rock Lane. Additionally, O’Neill Regional Park campgrounds were closed to the public.
Residents who chose to remain in their homes were required to sign a “refusal to evacuate” notice, acknowledging the risks and the possibility of limited future assistance. School districts in the affected areas, including Saddleback Valley Unified, canceled classes for September 10, with plans to resume based on further guidance.
Authorities have established evacuation centers at the Rancho Santa Margarita Bell Tower Regional Community Center, the Orange County Fair Grounds for large animals, and a Ralphs parking lot for smaller animals. Road closures have been implemented at multiple intersections, including Plano Trabuco Road and Joshua Drive, and Santa Margarita Parkway.
Firefighters are using a combination of ground crews, bulldozers, and aircraft to combat the blaze. The Orange County Fire Authority’s new Firehawk helicopters are among the resources deployed. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and no injuries have been reported.
As the situation evolves, residents and officials are closely monitoring the fire’s progress and working to ensure the safety of all affected.
